Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jennie Kim moved to New Zealand when she was 10 years old, as a study-abroad student. In an interview done by MBC when she was a student at the ACG Parnell College in Auckland, New Zealand, Jennie explained she listened to a lot of South Korean pop music since she was young.

Jennie left for Korea and began auditioning for YG Entertainment, her agency of choice since her New Zealand days. In August of 2010, Jennie signed as a trainee with YG Entertainment. During her trainee period, Jennie became one of the best known trainees of YG, being featured in several of YG Entertainment’s artists/ songs, such as G-Dragon’s “Black” and Lee Hi’s “Special”.
